The experts were wrong.

Wealthy Lad certainly wasn't favoured amongst any of the racing experts on Sunday even his owners were being told he couldn't win.

Starting first up though for almost five months Wealthy Lad went on to score an impressive win in the Open Handicap and it didn't surprise trainer Bill Ryan.

"I certainly thought he could win and would've been disappointed if he missed a place, but he is such a lazy bugger that I thought he'd improve on what he did today and might be a risk", said Ryan.

Wealthy Lad had run two reasonable trials leading up to Sunday's race and Ryan believes this may have scared some of the better judges away.

"He is laid back in his work and in his trials, and I guess his round belly scared a few away too", joked Ryan.

Tamar Racing Team Members got the word straight from the horses mouth on Friday when Ryan suggested an improvement from two recent trails was on the cards.

Premier jockey Brendan McCoull was delighted with the win claiming he felt he was on the winner not long after jumping.

"He felt like a different horse mentally today than he did during the trial which gave me a lot of confidence", said McCoull.

"I was more than impressed with the way he gathered up the leaders carrying eight kilos more than some of them and then kicked away", he went on to say.

Ryan has taken his time with the horse and doesn't plan on knocking him around too much at this time of the year.

"He is lightly raced and he has shown me enough to make him a weight for age horse here in Tasmania so I will give him a short preparation, that he will hopefully enjoy and bring him back for the Newmarket".

Ryan isn't out to give Wealthy Lad a holiday though and has already pencilled in a race at Sandown in a fortnights time.

"There is a nice race in Melbourne for him and I'd like to see him meet some really strong opposition to toughen him up for the Weight for Age races next season".

The win of Wealthy Lad along with a solid first up run against the older horses by the Elesha Spillane trained Speedy Sky and a third by Araya has given the Tamar Racing Team a handy break in the Tasmanian Racing Challenge premiership.
