Trainer Gary White (left) shapes up to Bill Ryan

A friendly rivalry and sheepish grins mask two feverishly competitive spirits ready to do battle for more than just bragging rights.

Tasmanian Cups King Gary White and T.J Smith protege Bill Ryan shaped up to each other, representing the Derwent and Tamar regions respectively, for the Tasmanian Racing Challenge launched at the Country Club Casino last week.

TasRacing's Wendy Kennedy officially launched the Tas Racing Challenge, which will unofficially decide which end of the state has the best horses, as one of the newly formed TasRacing's first initiatives.

"This will allow anyone interested in racing to see what its like on the 'other' side of the fence", said Ms Kennedy.

Bill Ryan who represented the Tamar Racing Team, which also included Elesha Pilgrim and Ken Hanson, felt that the Tas Racing Challenge was more important than just who had the best horses.

"It's about getting young people, and families, interested in racing because thats where the future of this industry lies", commented Ryan.

"To have a horse racing literally each week, which your whole family can follow, meet, and learn about for less than two dollars a week is the perfect way to open the door, which has kept people out for too long", he elaborated.

Gary White who represented the Derwent Team, which also includes Seven Mile Beach Trainer Jason Clifford, was enthusiastic about the opportunity this provided to the average person on the street.

"This is such an affordable concept that it provides anyone with an interest in racing an avenue to get involved, test the water, and be provided with an education about owning, breeding, or racing horses", he said.

"I look forward to meeting the members and introducing them to these beautiful animals, which hopefully they have as much fun racing as I do", he went on to say.

The websites for each team can be found at www.derwentracing.com.au or www.tamarracing.com.au.  A Facebook group (Tasmanian Racing Challenge) where members can interact socially, away from the track, has also been established.
